We are so pleased to be able to share this photos that was taken randomly during a routine visit to Kahar and Hartini's farm.

Since being involved in the Cocoa Care program Kahar has seen an increase in his productivity levels which means the coming months for Hartini are going to be busy harvesting all those pods! Now that Hartini has all the tools she needs, including a valuable wheelbarrow, Hartini will be able to conduct her job in an effective and efficient way allowing her more time at home with their 3 year old daughter Zahran.

New Trees Growing Well

Kahar has been out in his farming tending to the new cocoa trees by removing weeds, tossing the soil and checking to make sure they are pest and disease free. The new trees Kahar received were planted as a part of your family sponsorship program and it is certainly wonderful to see Kahar enthusiastically caring for his new trees to ensure they are healthy and establishing well.

Kahar's New Trees & Sidegrafting

Posted on February 14, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

January 2014 was a very happy month for Farmer Kahar as he received and planted his new superior quality top grafted cocoa tree seedlings, with the help of Cocoa Carer Darwis, as a part of your program.

Kahar had lost trees over the years due to age and pest & diseases so these new trees will significantly help him and his family increase farm productivity and help them onto a path for a brighter future.

Your trees will begin to fruit in about 18 months and from mid 2016 onwards your trees should be producing up to 2kg of cocoa each year or enough to make about 2.3 kg of 70% dark chocolate, about three to four times the current average production of a “typical” cocoa tree in the world today.

In about 9 months time, the main tree / old trunk of the newly sidegrafted trees will be cut away giving the new sidegrafted shoot all the nutrients. In the meantime, Kahar can still harvest fruit from the main tree. The new shoot will begin to fruit in much the same timeframe as the new cocoa tree seedlings although slightly quicker.

Exciting times for Kahar!

Hartini Receives Her Tool Pack

Posted on December 30, 2013 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

On December 19, 2013 Cocoa Carer Zainuddin presented Hartini with her tool pack.

While Kahar's tool pack provides tools required for heavier work on the farm, Hartini's pack designed for work such as pruning, harvesting and farm sanitation including personal protective equipment as well as to help her carry enough water and food with her while working in the farm.

Previously, Hartini simply went without the tools necessary to perform her work making do with whatever she could find in the home and carrying very little (if any) food & water into the farm for her work day. Your harvest pack will significantly help Hartini to perform her duties in the cocoa farm effectively, efficiently and safely and also allow her to spend more time at home with her young family.

Kahar's New Tools

Posted on December 10, 2013 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

On December 6th, following his training in Tarengge, a very happy Kahar received his much needed tool pack.

Kahar, like most cocoa farmers, lack the tools required to perform basic good agricultural practices (GAP) of pruning, fertilising, sanitation and harvesting.

Thanks to your sponsorship Kahar now has his own tools, pest management equipment, personal protective gear to keep safe and other items required to empower him to routinely apply GAP to increase his farm productivity and long term sustainability.
