Essential tools, equipment and personal protective gear has been distributed to to all farmers involved in the RTM program.

This equipment package will give the farmers the tools they need to implement their learnings at training and continue those practices on their farms.

For most of these farmers in the past, they have had to borrow tools and equipment from friends or neighbours who could afford to purchase them which made work very difficult.

In-Farm Training

Having returned home from training and motivated to implement their learnings back on their own farm, our Cocoa Care's and Program Monitors have conducted in-farm training. This training, conducted on 16 Nov, 2016, is designed to help the farmers to put their learnings into practice on their own farms.

It also helps them to get their farms ready for the next season with the help from fellow program members and under supervision of the Cocoa Care team as they work together on each others farms to get the job done.

Farmer GAP Training

Posted on November 08, 2016 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

The first group of farmers to join the RTM / IPNI program travelled to Tarengge, South Sulawesi to attend a 2 day intensive training session with highly experienced trainers. The training was conducted on Sept 16-17.

Over the course of the 2 days, farmers are taught a variety of topics that give farmers the fundamental knowledge and skills in GAP (good agricultural practices). Topics included are; Correct pruning techniques, farm sanitation, pest and disease management, fertilizing, pod and bean quality, pod opening, effects of cocoa pod borer on beans (black beans), harvesting and quality control.

In class training sessions are combined with practical classes on a demonstration farm which allows farmers to practice their learnings under the guidance of the trainer. At the end of each day the farmers return to the classroom for more learning, Q&A and give presentations to the rest of the group.

These training sessions are also combined with a visit to a demonstration farm which is designed to inspire farmers by showing them a farm that consistently achieves 2 - 3 metric tons per hectare. This provides motivation for them to implement their learnings back on their own farm.

On October 4th, 2016 we had the pleasure of taking our new sponsor Rio Tinto Minerals (RTM) to the cocoa farms in Soppeng, South Sulawesi.

A one day field visit allowed us to introduce some of the farmers joining the RTM trial program, demonstrate our monitoring and evaluation processes, meet the Cocoa Care team, plant some cocoa trees and inspect a new soil kiosk recently established through the Cocoa Care programs. A successful day and we look forward to Rio Tinto visiting again soon.
