For The Future Of Cocoa

2014 Harvest Season

Posted on August 17, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 1 comment

Kusnadi and Wahyuni having been working extremely hard this year maintaining their farm, fertilizing, pruning, sanitising etc in order to maximise their productivity potential for the 2014 main harvest period. The main crop is typically June, July & August depending on weather patterns.

Most farmers, including Kusnadi, have witnessed the decline in the cocoa productivity over the years due to poorly managed farms.

Thanks to The National Confectioners Association's sponsorship this year is a very different story for Kusnadi and Wahyuni who report they have not seen this many cocoa pods on their trees in a very long time.

While the 2014 harvest season will continue through to the end of August, we are expecting Kusnadi and Wahyuni to see a productivity increase of approximately 90%.

So how did Kusnadi and Wahyuni increase their productivity? The sponsorship received by NCA allowed Kusnadi to:

  • attend training in GAP (good agricultural practices) which taught him how to manage his farm in a sustainable way,
  • own the essential tools required to manage their farm effectively & efficiently
  • give the right nutrients to his trees through the fertilizers provided to him.
  • manage pest & disease issues that contributed to the decline in his productivity.
  • have access to ongoing support and guidance from a Cocoa Carer.

In addition, as Kusnadi and Wahyuni also received 150 highly productive cocoa tree seedlings as a part of the NCA's program they can expect to do even better in the 2015 / 2016 harvest season than they did this year.

Visit To Kusnadi's Farm

On May 22nd during a VIP field trip we had the opportunity to visit Kusnadi and see how his farm was looking heading into the main harvest season.

Kusnadi's farm is looking amazing! His trees are exceptionally well maintained and it is evident by the condition of his cocoa pods that the training he received is paying off for him. The cocoa pods on his farm are beautiful and disease free meaning the beans inside those pods should be in perfect condition.

The new high quality cocoa tree seedlings that were planted as part of your program are growing well and establishing a solid root system. These trees are certainly on track to start producing cocoa in early 2015.

Checking In

As a part of your Cocoa Care program, Kusnadi (and Wahyuni) recieve support from a Cocoa Care for the duration of your program. In late March 2014, Cocoa Care Darwis dropped in to Kusnadi's house and we were pleased to see Kusnadi was out in the farm taking care of his new baby cocoa trees.

The trees are coming along very well and starting to establish a good root system allowing the leaves to grow and subsequently will not require shade for much longer. Once the shade comes off the trees will start to grow pretty quickly and experience several growth spurts.

Kusnadi certainly looks quite pleased at the progress of his trees. We look forward to bringing you more updates on these new trees soon.

Kusnadi's Farm

Posted on March 15, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

Having spent months properly managing their farm by pruning, fertilizing, managing pests and diseases and caring for their cocoa trees Kusnadi and Wahyuni are starting to be rewarded for their hard work.

The farm looks wonderfully clean and healthy and the trees are the perfect shape allowing enough light into the farm for the trees to produce flowers and to help naturally manage those pests & diseases that affect cocoa.

With the main crop still to come in May / June / July it is fantastic to see so many flowers and cocoa pods on the trees as this time last year the farm was still bare.

By the looks of these pictures and reports coming in from our Cocoa Carer's in the field, Kusnadi and Wahyuni  will have the best production year they've seen for a very long time, if ever!

New Trees Planted

Posted on March 01, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

Kusnadi and Wahyuni have received and planted 150 new superior quality top grafted cocoa tree seedlings with the help and guidance from Cocoa Care Aris.

Over the years Kusnadi, like many farmers, have lost trees mainly due to ageing trees, pests & diseases or simply the lack of knowledge about how to properly care for them. Replacing dead trees with high quality cocoa tree seedlings will significantly improve farm productivity and family income. Kusnadi, now armed with the right knowledge to care for all his trees, new and existing, is certainly on the right path to manage a sustainable cocoa farm and better provide for his family.

Kusnadi and Wahyuni smile as their new cocoa trees are planted.

Cocoa Carer Aris teaches Wahyuni how to properly shade their new trees.

The cocoa trees NCA has given to Kusnadi and his family will begin to fruit in about 18 months and from 2016 onwards your trees should be producing up to 2kg of cocoa each year or enough to make about 2.3 kg of 70% dark chocolate, about three to four times the current average production of a “typical” cocoa tree in the world today.

We will continue to monitor the progress of your trees so please check back soon.
