Cocoa Carer's and IPNI farmers convened on November 21, 2013 for a meeting to discuss preparations for the main crop harvest which will begin in April 2014.

For the past 2 months the region has experienced its seasonal dry period and we have been waiting for the rain in order to commence pre-harvest activities.

Now that the rain has started a meeting of farmers from all different Cocoa Care programs was arranged. The main points covered in the meeting were:

  • The pruning activities that are now underway,
  • Ensure that all phytopthera infected pods (black pods) are removed from the trees and composted to minimize re-infection on the new crop
  • Fertilizing which will take place in December and the application rates that will be applied.

The farmers were also briefed on new programs, which includes a significant number of new cocoa trees which will be provided to participating farmers who have dead trees on their farms.
