For The Future Of Cocoa

Starting to Harvest

Posted on April 17, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

While the main crop season is still a couple of months away, the improvements made on Sumange and Salsia's farm means the already have cocoa pods on their trees that need harvesting!

A well managed cocoa farm should have some cocoa on their trees pretty much all year round and the farming family would harvest some (usually small amounts) all throughout the year. Unfortunately, this is less common these days as farms are not managed well and farmers are really struggling to get out of the hole they find themselves in.

Through the Cocoa Care program, Sumange and Salsia have received the right training, tools, materials and support in order to get them on the right path and their subsequent dedication and efforts are now starting to pay off!

This time last year there were no pods on Sumange's trees (like most of his fellow farmers), not only are there a large number of pods around but the beans inside are wonderfully healthy looking.

New Trees & Lots of Pods

Posted on April 07, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

What a farm! These photos taken during a routine visit to Sumange's farm on March 26 show very healthy new cocoa trees, that have well established root systems and will soon go through a big growth spurt and begin to flower (and subsequently fruit). These new trees were planted back in May 2013 as a part of your program sponsorship back and are thriving!

The remainder of Sumange's farm is looking amazing with lots of Cocoa Pods visible in the trees and thousands of flowers waiting to turn into Cocoa Pods. It is very clear by these pictures that there will be a significant improvement on his annual harvest compared to last year.

The once shy and unhappy Sumange has grown into a confident and smiling man who is definitly on the right path to be a sustainable and sucessful cocoa farmer. This was only made possible through your kindness in sponsoring a Cocoa Care program to give Sumange & Salsia a helping hand they desperately needed.

Thank You!

Farm Looks Great!

On February 7, 2014 Cocoa Carer Darwis and Zainuddin visited Sumange and Salsia's farm to see how their farm is progressing prior to the main crop coming in May / June.

It is clear that their efforts are paying off with thousands of flowers visible on every tree and beautiful healthy looking pods on the trees.

The farm has been kept very well maintained and this should be a great season for Sumange and Salsia.

Checking In

The Cocoa Care field team visited Sumange and Salsia mid December to check in and see how their farm was progressing. It was lovely to see Salsia tending to some of their new trees provided by another Cocoa Care program.

Their farm is looking great! It is wonderfully maintained, well pruned, sufficiently fertilized and the result is a large amount of flowers already appearing on the trees. They should be set for a great main crop in May / June!

Salsia Takes Iniative

Posted on December 31, 2013 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

We never expected that during a visit to Sumange & Salsia's farm we would discover Aris was there teaching Salsia how to prune! It was during a random visit by Cocoa Carer Zainuddin when we learned of this amazing effort Salsia has made.

Salsia has always been very active in the farm, usually around harvest time, however she told us that she actually loves working in the farm and wanted to learn and do more. So on her own accord, Salsia reached out to Cocoa Carer Aris and asked him if he would come and teach her to prune. Which he did!

Both Sumange and Salsia are working extremely hard to manage their farm to improve productivity and have a more sustainable future. The initiative Salsia has taken to learn how to prune correctly is a testament to their dedication.

We are so proud of Salsia and pleased Zainuddin could capture this in photos.
