Rustam Goes To GAP Training

Posted on September 19, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

On September 10, 2014 Rustam travelled to Tarengge, South Sulawesi along with another group of Cocoa Care program participants to attend a 2 day intensive training session with highly experienced trainers.

Over the course of the 2 days, Rustam was taught a variety of topics that give provides the fundamental knowledge and skills in GAP (good agricultural practices). Topics included are; Correct pruning techniques, farm sanitation, pest and disease management, fertilizing, pod and bean quality, pod opening, effects of cocoa pod borer on beans (black beans), harvesting and quality control.

In class training sessions are combined with practical classes on a demonstration farm which allows participants to practice their learnings under the guidance of the trainer. At the end of each day the farmers return to the classroom for more learning, Q&A and give presentations to the rest of the group.

These training sessions are also combined with a visit to a demonstration farm which is designed to inspire farmers by showing them a farm that consistently achieves 2 - 3 metric tons per hectare. This provides motivation for them to implement their learnings back on their own farm.

On June 13, 2014 Yuliani was presented with her Womans Tool Pack that you sponsored as a part of our program.

Yuliani was given a set of tools and equipment identified by cocoa farming women as most important for them to conduct their work on the cocoa farm. This womens tool pack includes: pruning shears, safety mask and shoes, a raincoat along with drinking water and food carriers.

With her new tool pack, Yuliani can now work safely and efficiently in the farm allowing her to spend more time at home with her young family.

It is critically important that we support women in cocoa farming families and we extend our thanks to you for sponsoring this pack for Yuliani.

Meet The Recipients of Your Support

Posted on April 25, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

We are pleased to introduce you to Rustam, Hj.Heriani and Hj.Heriani who will be receiving much needed assistance thanks to your sponsorship.

Farmer Rustam and his wife Hj.Heriani have two sons: 15 year old Muh.Erwin and 10 year old Ahmad Taufiq who are both in primary school. Rustam and Hj.Heriani own 0.5 hectares of cocoa in Labessi, Mariowawo. Rustam will be receiving the training pack that you have sponsored while Hj.Heriani will receive the womens harvest pack.

Their 0.5 hectare farm produces around 200kg of cocoa per year which equates to USD $380 per year. Given that that cocoa farmers generally obtain a minimum of 50% of their income from cocoa it is vital we help Rustam and Hj.Heriani increase their production in order to have a sustainable farming business.

As with the majority of cocoa farms in this region, Rustam and Hj.Heriani do not manage their farm well nor do they have the resources and knowledge to turn their farm around. The training and tools you are providing them will make a significant difference and should see their productivity double over the next 12-18 months.

The recipient of the womens tool pack you have sponsored is Ibu Yuliani, wife of Farmer Aris and mother of 12 year old son Yusril. Farmer Aris has recently joined the IPNI cocoa care program and this womens tool pack complements Aris' program nicely by giving them both the equipment needed to perform their roles on the farm.

Thank You!

Thank you SK, Dephanie and Little En for your sponsorship of two womans tool packs and one farmer training pack.

Your training program will provide one cocoa farmer with formal in-class training in good agricultural practices (GAP) at the Mars Cocoa Academy School along with on-farm training with a Cocoa Carer to help your farmer implement his learnings back in his own farm.

Farmers traditionally lack the essential skills and knowledge in GAP and your training will significantly help the receipt of your training program to have healthy and successful cocoa farming businesses.

In addition, two lucky women will receive tools and materials which are essential for them to perform their duties on the farm in a productive and safe way allowing them to perform their jobs more effectively and spend more time home with their children.

A woman's role in cocoa farming is critical and we thank you for supporting one of the women on our meet the farmers page.

We will post photos and updates of your program progress via this blog page so please check back soon.
