New Trees Planted

Posted on May 15, 2014 by Cocoa Care | 0 comments

Farmer Sultan has planted 40 new superior quality top grafted cocoa tree seedlings with the help and guidance from Cocoa Care Darwis.

Over the years Sultan, like many of his fellow farmers, have lost trees mainly due to ageing trees, pests & diseases or simply the lack of knowledge about how to properly care for them. Replacing dead trees with high quality cocoa tree seedlings will significantly improve farm productivity and family income.

Sultan's new cocoa trees will begin to fruit in about 18 months and from 2016 onwards your trees should be producing up to 2kg of cocoa each year or enough to make about 2.3 kg of 70% dark chocolate, about three to four times the current average production of a “typical” cocoa tree in the world today.

We will continue to monitor the progress of your trees so please check back soon.

On March 28, 2013 Cocoa Care team member Zainuddin delivered 22 superior quality top grafted seedlings to the recipient of your support program - Farmer Sultan.

Sultan was humbled by your gift of new cocoa trees and has plans to commence planting these trees under the guidance of one of the Cocoa Carers. These new trees will be planted with the appropriate levels of fertilizer to give them the best start possible and shaded with leaves while they are still young.

Once the trees are planted we will share with photos of this activity so please check back soon.

We are pleased to introduce you to Farmer Sultan and his wife Nani who will be receiving 22 new high quality top grafted cocoa tree seedlings you have sponsored.

Farmer Sultan and his wife Nani have one son 8 year old Edil and own 0.7 hectares of Cocoa in Cabenge, South Sulawesi. Sultan's farm produces around 400kg per year from his farm which suffers from cocoa pod borer and black pod.

An increasingly big problem for cocoa farmers in Sulawesi is old, non productive or dead cocoa trees. By helping cocoa farmers like Sultan to replace some of those trees he has lost will help him and his family onto a path for brighter future.

Sultan already knows how to properly manage his farm in a sustainable way as he has received essential training in good agricultural practices as a part of another sponsorship program.

We look forward to updating you on the progress of your trees over the next 2 years and hope you check back here again soon.

Up next - tree planting.
